Town Historian, Lori Schmidt was recently notified that her nomination application  for Samuel Ringgold Ward's induction into the National Abolition Hall of Fame & Museum in Peterboro, NY was approved!

The National Abolition HOF & Museum honors antislavery abolitionists, their work to end slavery, and the legacy of that struggle, and strives to complete the second and ongoing abolition - the moral conviction to end racism.

For more information on Samuel's history in South Butler check out the Facebook page "Butler Historical Preservation Society - Wayne County NY" as well as the mural dedicated to him & Antoinette Brown on Route 89.

The induction weekend is scheduled for October 23-25, 2026.

Assemblyman Brian Manktelow presents Butler Historian Lori Fry Schmidt with a Citation in recognition of the Patriot Burial Historical Marker in honor of Revolutionary War Veteran Ezekiel Scott.
We had a nice day on September 28, 2024 for the dedication of the Patriot Burial Historical Marker honoring Ezekiel Scott.  Did you know he was at the first Butler Town meeting in 1826 where he was named "Overseer of the poor" as well as a "fence viewer"?  A fence viewer was the precursor to code enforcement.  He would make sure fences were in good repair & in cases of disputes between neighbors, work to resolve their differences.  He also was part of a three man committee who chose the name of Butler for the town to honor General William Butler of the Revolution.
