The Butler Historical Preservation Society was formed in 2003 when community members gathered to restore the Butler Center Methodist Church built in 1836 from trees cut on site (you can still see the trunks underneath the floor!) and sawed into lumber at the mill just down the road and still in operation today. The church is thought to be the oldest Methodist Church in Wayne County and now serves as the Butler Historical Preservation Society Museum.
The society then focused on restoring what is believed to be the only cobblestone schoolhouse in the United States built approx. 1824 and used until 1932.
Both buildings are on the National & State Register of Historic Places and are open the first Saturday of the month from June - October from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
For further information and to keep up with B.H.P.S. events, follow us on Facebook Butler Historical Preservation Society-Wayne County NY. We are always looking for new members and membership prices are affordable! Individual memberships are $10/year, Family memberships $15/year, Students (17 years or under) $1/year and Life Members $250. We are a 501c3 organization and all contributions are tax deductible. We would like to thank the Town of Butler residents and Town Board for your support!
The heritage we share is worthy of our best efforts to preserve it.
As Town of Butler Historian, I am always looking for old Butler photos (people & buildings that have been here a long time) & artifacts. Please contact me if you have any questions. I am happy to borrow photos, scan and return them to you. I am currently working on a walking tour of South Butler so look for more information once Spring/Summer rolls around. There's a lot of history to share that I'll bet you never knew about!

BUTLER HOMETOWN HEROES BANNER PROJECT
In our 198 years as the Town of Butler, residents have contributed to the safety & security of the United States by serving in our armed forces.
As town historian, I encourage residents to consider participating in our Hometown Heroes Banner Project by honoring a family member currently serving our country or a veteran.
Banners are approximately 30" x 60" and will be displayed along Route 89 from Memorial Day until Veteran's Day. They will be stored for safekeeping over the winter at the town and reinstalled every year. You just need to provide a good quality photo or image file which will be returned as well as an order form (which can be downloaded here). Banner price (including brackets) will be $145 and the banners will be produced by local Wayne County business Photographic Services in Williamson.
Orders need to be submitted by April 1, 2024 in order to be installed by Memorial Day.
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." - John F. Kennedy
